Equity in Literacy Coordinator

  • Job Status: Full-Time

  • Location: Wichita, KS (With some travel)

  • Work Schedule: M-F 9:00-5:00 with some evening/weekends required

  • Reports to: CEO

  • Travel: Quarterly travel to designated Kansas communities. 

  • Positions Supervised: Early Literacy Outreach Coordinators, African American Outreach, Hispanic/Latino Outreach

  • Ideal Start Date: July 5, 2021 

 

Position Summary:

The Equity in Literacy Coordinator will recruit, train, and facilitate engagement with nonprofits, statewide organizations, school districts, and institutions of power across the state of Kansas in order to support the African American Literacy Coalition and BIPOC literacy outreach in our Kansas community. This opportunity will include a variety of duties to ensure all students across Kansas have access to books and resources that will increase literacy rates in minority demographic groups. The Coordinator will work with others to better understand literacy issues facing Kansas students and will advocate for effective policy enactment and implementation, oversee the literacy coalition, and grow community leaders through community organizing.

  • Develop relationships with Kansans directly affected by systems and/or issues related to literacy and poverty issues.

  • Increase awareness, encourage grassroots and advocacy action.

  • Recruit, train, and oversee individuals to serve as Early Literacy Outreach in each of our targeted communities.

  • Connect with and provide technical assistance to individuals, schools, nonprofits, faith-based organizations, and others to create a sustainable statewide network of supporters to advocate for issues of social justice. 

  • Participate as a member of partner agency coalitions as assigned.

  • Provide research, writing, and other support for Storytime Village’s advocacy agenda as needed.

  • Develop and maintain good, meaningful relationships with state and local agencies, non-profit partners and community members across the state.

  • Contribute to external communications about the coalition, including developing social media content, op-eds, articles, in person presentations, etc. 

  • Fundraise and develop resources for the advancement of equity in literacy throughout the state. 

  • Help develop campaigns. 

  • Actively participate in external meetings.

 

Qualifications: 

  • Able to develop deep understanding and expertise on literacy in BIPOC communities.

  • Able to work independently, think strategically, and achieve outcomes while contributing to a team campaign.

  • Dependable, detail-oriented, and well organized – able to multitask, meet deadlines and ability to pivot quickly between campaign issue areas.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including an ability to engage with individuals from all backgrounds.

  • Adept professional judgement and ability to be diplomatic. 

  • Exercise discretion and independent judgment in performance of duties.  

 

Desired Experience and Skills:

 

Education and Experience:  A bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline and a minimum of 2 years of experience in policy analysis & research, communications, resource development, campaign development, coalitions & stakeholder alliances, and grassroots organizing, or a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience in working with communities of color and the African American community preferred. 

 

Computer Skills: Strong proficiency with Google software, Microsoft Office Suite, and ability to learn project management software.

 

Work Environment:  

Combination of remote work environment and in office and/or in person work.

 

Pay and Benefits:

Starting salary $40,000, with competitive benefits package.
